It’s your day
There’s no right way to do this.
You don’t have to have a certain kind of ceremony just because that’s what people do at weddings.
Keep the traditions that mean something to you. Change the ones that don’t quite fit. Skip the rest entirely.
Want to write your own vows? Great. Want me to ask you a question and all you have to say is “I do”? Also great.
Religious. Nonreligious. A little of both. Heartfelt. Funny. Short and sweet. Full of stories. Just the two of you. Everyone you’ve ever met.
We start with what feels like you and build from there.
So, what actually goes into a ceremony?
We set the tone.
Warm and heartfelt? Light and funny? A little of both? This is where everyone settles in and realizes they’re not about to sit through a ceremony that could belong to any two people.
This is where we find that thread.
How you got here. What you love about each other. The stories, people and moments that matter. It doesn’t need to be your entire relationship history.
The good stuff makes the cut.
Have something that’s meaningful to you? Bring it.
A reading. A prayer. A family tradition. A cultural tradition. A song lyric. Something completely made up because you like it.
And if none of that sounds like you, we don’t need any of it.
Your words, mine, or none at all.
- You can write them yourselves.
- I can help you write them.
- You can repeat after me.
- We can keep them simple.
- Or skip personal vows and stick with the legal promises.
Nobody is getting assigned homework they don’t want.
Ideally nobody drops one.
You give each other rings. I say some things.
If your dog is the ring bearer, all bets are off.
You don’t need to study for this.
There are a few things we need to accomplish to legally get you married. I’ll make sure we do them.
This part you’ve probably got covered.
I’ll do my best to dive out of the way of pictures.
Yes, he said “I do” early.
You’re not getting a script with your names dropped into the blanks.
I’ll write your ceremony based on what we talk about, and you’ll have the chance to make sure it feels right.
Too sentimental? Tell me.
Not sentimental enough? Tell me.
A story you absolutely do not want told in front of your grandmother? Definitely tell me.
The goal isn’t for me to love your ceremony. The goal is for you to.
A few things I don’t care about. And one thing I do.
- I don’t care if you’re doing things “the traditional way.”
- I don’t care which one of you walks down the aisle first, or if you skip the aisle altogether.
- I don’t care if you’re wearing a tux, a wedding dress, both, or neither.
- I don’t care if you’ve written five pages of vows or would rather eat the marriage license than write your own.
- I don’t care if your wedding has 200 people or two.
- I don’t care who you love. I’m just glad you found it.
The one thing I do
I care that when we’re done, you’re married and the ceremony felt like yours
Best dressed. Not close.
Have a dog?
Obviously bring the dog.
I support dogs in weddings. Dogs walking down the aisle. Dogs sitting with Grandma. Dogs wearing bow ties. Dogs in suits. Dogs in tiny tuxedos.
Especially dogs in tiny tuxedos.
We will make sure we’re following the actual witness requirements in the state where you’re getting married before giving your dog any legally significant responsibilities.
Everything else is negotiable.
